Climate Emergency Action in Brooklyn - Sunday 12/6!

Tue, 12/01/2009 - 10:37pm

In This Message:

Sunday 12/6 - Climate Emergency Action!
Tell Obama to Lead the Fight Against
Global Warming in Copenhagen!

Bring the Kids! make Ice Globes!
Hope to See You there!

*************************************

TCK….TCK…TCK…..GREEN PARTY
CLIMATE EMERGENCY ACTION!
SUNDAY, 12/6 IN BROOKLYN

TELL PRESIDENT OBAMA:
“LEAD THE FIGHT AGAINST GLOBAL
WARMING IN COPENHAGEN -
STAND UP TO CLIMATE-COOKING
COAL CORPORATIONS!”

Please join The Green Party of Brooklyn, the
Park Slope Greens, Parents for Climate Protection
and other groups in Park Slope, Brooklyn, at 3pm on the
corner of 3rd St & 5th Ave – Sunday, Dec 6th to pledge
our community’s support for climate change legislation
that follows the demands of The EARTH, not big business.

* We’ll gather dozens of ice globes made by YOU and your
neighbors (go to www.gpbk.org to learn how to make them
or see what they look like) — and display them by
candlelight as the sun sets

* Pledge cards will be on hand so you can send a personal
message to the President that now is the time to save our
planet

* Local environmental activists and climate change experts
will be on hand to answer your questions and talk about what’s
next in the climate change movement

***

During his election campaign, Barack Obama promised to “restore
science” to the fight against global warming.*

But on November 25 the president proposed an emissions reductions
target of just 17% below 2005 levels by 2020, however this is just
a tiny fraction of what scientists says is needed. Now, as Obama
plans for his Dec 9 visit to Copenhagen, it’s time for us to let
him know we expect this country to join the European Union, Japan
and Great Britain in setting a target that will cut down the risks
of climate change on our future.

Now is not the time for small plans! The US is responsible for 30%
of the global warming pollution in our atmosphere today. Yet we are
just 5% of the world’s population. The U.S. coal industry alone emits
almost as much global warming pollution –8%– than India and Africa
combined - that’s 2.3 billion people! The U.S. must take responsibility
for our pollution.

Come to 3rd Street and 5th Avenue on December 6th, bring your ice globe,
and take a stand for our future! Email iceglobes@gpbk.org or call
718-369-2998 to tell us how many you’re bringing or if you have any questions.

*Science calls for the United States and the developed world to cut pollution
by at least 25 to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, and to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions 80 to 95 percent by 2050.

DAVID PECHEFSKY CAMPAIGN
WRAP-UP AND THANK YOU!

A very heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support, time,
and effort.   I feel very happy with the race we ran — it was
principled, engaging, substantive, and fun.

By now many of you have seen the numbers and the truth is that
I cannot help but feel disappointed.  According to the unofficial
count we got about 1,500 votes or 7%. (Although our own tally from
the polls we closed was closer to 1,750).   All day long yesterday,
people — many of whom I had never seen before - passed me giving
me the thumbs up, or came up to shake my hand, or after a last
minute entreaty from me or one of my team came back from the poll
saying “I voted for you.”  And the numbers we got from MS 51 where
I ended the night were closer to 20% so I really was feeling pretty
good walking to our party.

How to explain it? Of course one thing is that the two-party system
is so entrenched that it is very, very hard to get people to vote
otherwise.  But here are a couple of ways of looking at the numbers
that tell a more positive story.

First there are only about 360 registered Greens in district.  So even
discounting for those who voted for me mostly out of personal loyalty,
we probably got over 1,000 non-Greens to vote Green.

Brad Landers’s (D) vote total represented the equivalent of 30% of
registered Democrats.  Joe Nardiello’s (R) 40% of registered Republicans.
But ours 400% of registered Greens!

We also gained more votes than 2 of the 5 Dems who ran in the primary,
despite those two being good candidates who considerably outspent us.

And in Park Slope we beat the Republican by 957 votes to 517, gaining 19%
of the total!  The difference between these numbers and the overall outcome
highlights that the 39th Council District, which extends from Cobble Hill to
Borough Park is not a “Park Slope District” nor for that matter a particularly
progressive district; although the fact that the Democratic nominee tends be
someone deemed progressive makes it very hard for a challenger from the left.

I hope this puts things in perspective a little bit.

And certainly no other campaign brought more smiles to people’s faces then we
did with the funny t-shirts and our high spirits, nor was more fun for kids
with our activity book and free puppet shows.

For a nice summary of the campaign please read Louise Crawford’s piece in
Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn: (this should be all one line but we had to put it on two)

www.onlytheblogknowsbrooklyn.typepad.com//only_the_blog_knows_brook/2009/11/the-hardest-working-candidate-in-brooklyn-david-pechefsky.html

So, was it the right thing to do?
Absolutely, not the least because of the all the new friends I made and the
old friends I reconnected with.

And in political terms?  Absolutely.  Many people asked me in the course of the
campaign why with my strong resume etc. I wasn’t running as a Democrat so I would
“have a chance at winning.”  No way!  The City Council doesn’t need any more
deal-making Democrats who compromise their principles to get appointed the chair
of some good sounding committee etc. etc. and the political system as a whole
needs to be pushed on the Green party principles of ecological wisdom, social
justice, grassroots democracy, and non-violence.

So keep an eye out for us Greens and consider coming to some Park Slope Greens meetings.
We usually meet the second Monday of the month at the Methodist Church on 6th Avenue and
8th Street. There is lots to be done.

Best,
David

A MESSAGE FROM THE GREEN PARTY
OF NEW YORK STATE

Vote Green Party today!

Fellow Green Party members,

Election Day is upon us today, Tuesday, November 3rd.
This year we have a dozen strong candidates across the
state running for election or re-election on the Green
Party line. The Green Party represents a real choice in
the usually sordid world of New York State politics.
Greens around the state have been fighting against the
spoiling of our wilderness, harmful gas drilling upstate,
for single-payer universal health care, affordable housing,
living wage jobs, same-sex marriage equality, and against
climate change. Help us put them over the top by giving
last-minute donations to their campaigns, volunteering to
help on election day, or just getting the word out to
friends and family in their districts.

Polls will be open from 6:00am-9:00pm for New York City, Nassau,
Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Erie counties.
For other counties, 12:00noon-9:00pm.

Very Sad News

Mon, 11/02/2009 - 2:53pm

In This Message:

Very Sad News

*************************************

The Park Slope Greens are extremely sad to report that Estelle Epstein,
one of our most enthusiastic and dedicated members, passed away last week.

Into her 90s, Estelle was one of the most energetic and concerned activists
one could ever meet. She had an extremely sharp and analytical mind, as well
as being a veracious reader. She was part of many activist groups and regularly
attended meetings of her own community board. She was concerned about many
issues of our day, but she had a particular concern about the abolition of nuclear
weapons and she put much energy into that cause.

Estelle would attend Park Slope Greens Meetings as often as she could, always coming
with a major concern that she wished the group to take action on. Estelle was full
of wisdom and always had a story or joke to tell. She had a quirky and funny personality
and when you got to know her, you could not help but see what a sweet and loving person
she was, who thought about others needs and wanted to help if she could.

After 9/11, The Park Slope Greens and The War Resisters League held a weekly peace vigil on Flatbush Avenue for over a year. Estelle came to the vigil each week, rain or shine.
Although it was not physically easy for her, she stood the entire time, even when other
(much younger and healthier!) people either did not attend, or did not stay for long.

In recent years, when Estelle was homebound, she insisted on continuing to do political
work as best she could. Working with a friend who helped with web research, Estelle
contacted the theater departments of colleges lobbying them to do a revival of Bury the
Dead, which she thought would help educate people about war.

Estelle dedicated most of her life to political activism and to making the world a better place. The world has lost an activist of the highest moral fiber. Estelle died after bravely battling many illnesses and we will miss her tremendously.

We hope to put together an evening to honor Estelle’s memory as soon as possible.
More about that to come.

Election Day: Less Than One Week To Go - Get Involved!

Thu, 10/29/2009 - 2:54pm

In This Message:

ELECTION DAY IS LESS THAN ONE WEEK AWAY
GET INVOLVED!!

2) Rev. Billy Campaign…Lots Going On!

*************************************

DAVID PECHEFSKY CAMPAIGN
FOR NYC COUNCIL - DIST 39
ELECTION DAY IS LESS THAN
ONE WEEK AWAY….THIS IS IT!!

Election Day is LESS THAN ONE WEEK AWAY and we could still use
more volunteers. Even if you can’t work the entire day, please
consider coming out for one or both of the most crucial shifts:
from 6 to 9 AM and/or from 5 to 9 PM or if you have a few hours
during the day, anytime late morning - late afternoon. We will
have a new brochure to hand out, showing people where to find
David on the ballot! Please let me know when you can work by
contacting Jonathan at jonathan@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com,
especially those of you who live in district and would like to work
at your own polling site.

Do you know someone who needs a ride to the polls? Let us know
because we have a volunteer with a seven-person van who is willing
transport people.

One Last Chance For Weekend Lit Drops!

This Sunday we will be handing out literature at the J. J. Byrne
and Carroll Park Farmer’s Markets from 1 to 4 PM. We will also be
lit dropping in Carroll Gardens at the same time. Please let us know
if you can help out. This is your LAST WEEKEND to help the campaign!

And One Finale Debate to Attend

Thursday, October 29 at 7PM
This debate is sponsored by the Food Coalition along with other
community groups. Topics to be covered include health, sustainability,
school food and curriculum, expanding access to healthy food, social
justice for food workers and consumers and local healthy food sources.
The debate takes place at PS 10 (7th Ave & Prospect Ave) in Park Slope.
This is your final chance to hear David go up against Democrat Brad Lander
and Republican Joe Nardiello.

Internet Ads

We’ve made an internet ad purchase so people in district (with the following
zip codes: 11201, 11204, 11215, 11218, 11219, 11220, and 11231) should be
seeing David pop-up on their screen. Please email david@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com
if you see the adds!

David Scores Favorably in Two More Past Debates

Blogger Katia Kelly gave David a thumbs up for his performance at the Carroll Gardens
Neighborhood Association Debate. “I felt like Goldilocks,” she writes. “One candidate
was too angry (Republican Nardiello), one was too smooth (Democrat Lander), and one was just right (Green Pechefsky).” Read her entire coverage at:

http://pardonmeforasking.blogspot.com/2009/10/democrat-republican-and-green-candidate.html

And several of us were also on hand last Thursday night at the Central Brooklyn
Independent Democrats (CBID) meeting as David and Brad Lander discussed issues
pertaining to the workings of the city council and fielded questions as to what
they would do differently if they were elected. This is David’s milieu, of course,
and although once again the tone was congenial, it was clear to everyone in the room
that David was the more knowledgeable candidate.

And Don’t Forget the Halloween Parade!

We still need volunteers for the Park Slope Halloween parade to be in the parade and
to help make costumes and change David’s pedicab into a pirate ship!!!  (We’ll park
the ’ship’ at the end of the route for the whole parade).  The theme is ’spooky seas’
and we want to collect clean recyclables because we’ll have a polluted sea theme as
our ’spooky seas’.  The parade is on October 31 starting at 6:30 from 7th Ave & 14th
Street and ending at the Old Stone House (5th Ave & 3rd Street). Please let me know
if you can help by responding to jonathan@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com

REV. BILLY TALEN CAMPAIGN
LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO!

Two-termers,

We are in the final strech of our campaign now! We want to invite
you to some wonderful events that will round out our last full
week before election day.

This Thursday we will be at Washington Square Park with the NYC
Climate Action Group and Rain Forest Relief. We will bring to tragic
life the use of tropical rain forest hardwood in our parks and put
some pressure on King Mike to be the environmental mayor he says he
is — dress like an animal or wear furry clothes (but not real fur,
of course)! Meet between the arch and the fountain at 5:30!

Shortly after this action, come to a House Party at the Torn Page Salon
on 22nd Street at 7:00pm. There will be food, drink, and much singing!

This Saturday is our big Zomberg Rampage event! We’ve got all the info
for you (including line-up location and time) at voterevbilly.org/events/halloween.
It’s not too late to get involved with us! Email zombies@voterevbilly.org for more info!

Also this Sunday, Nov. 1 is our grand finale show Hot Democracy at the Highline
Ballroom. Rev. Billy and The Life After Shopping Choir will be putting the odd
and back in God and the neighborhood back in the city! Tickets are $12, click
here to order them online.  Doors are at noon, and the show starts at 1pm.

David & Brad: Head to Head! Help w/ Lit Drops!

Thu, 10/22/2009 - 2:55pm

In This Message:

1) More David & Brad Debates! Please Help with Lit Drops!

2) Rev. Billy Campaign Info

*************************************

DAVID NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!

We need YOUR help this weekend to pass out David’s
campaign literature!

This coming Saturday and Sunday we need volunteers
for a lit drop from 11am to 5pm in Carroll Gardens.
We will meet at Carroll Park, just across from the
Carroll Street Station on the F/G lines. Please note:
the trains are terminating at either Jay St/Boro Hall
or Church Avenue (depending on which direction you’re
travelling) where you will catch a shuttle bus to Carroll
Street.  You can come at any time and stay as long
as you can, but let us know that you are planning to
help so we will know to wait for you.

Debates and Controversy
David didn’t pull his punches at Monday night’s Candidate
Debate sponsored by the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood
Association as he, Democrat Brad Landerand Republican
Joe Nardiello answered questions from Carroll Gardens residents
on everything from city budgeting to universal health care.
Although the mood was congenial, when Lander stated that not
only was it inappropriate for a candidate to take a stand on
the issue of voting for a Council Speaker, but that refusing to
compromise on such an issue would make one an outsider and even a
liability, David countered that a candidate who refused to compromise
his principles was not a liability but someone you want to have in office.

Earlier in the day, all three candidates were together for a
photo-op because of a controversy over Mr. Lander’s write-up
in the Voter Guide which 80,000 CD 39 voters received in the
mail last week.  Written in June when the focus was on
the Democratic Primary, Mr. Lander stated that he was the only
candidate with children in Public School.  Although true for
the Primary contest, that statement is factually inaccurate for
the general election where both David and the Republican have children
attending Public School.  We organized a press event to dramatize
that fact in front of MS 51 where David’s older daughter attends.

Watch the Brooklyn Paper Video Debate Online
A few days earlier the three candidates debated similar issues in
a private debate held in the offices of the Brooklyn Paper.
Although the subsequent write-up was not quite the endorsement we
were hoping for, it does give David’s supporters, especially those
of you who’ve missed the debates, to watch him express his viewpoints
in a live video. Click on the link below and then follow the instructions
in the article:

www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/32/42/32_42_gk_39th_debate.html

Candidate Debates Still Upcoming
TOMORROW October 22 at 8 PM
David will go head to head with Democratic candidate Brad Lander at
the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID). This is CBID’s
monthly meeting but it is open to the public. The discussion will
focus on David’s strongest point: reform of the Council and the role of
the Speaker.  This topic has generated a lot of press and is a point
where the two candidates strongly disagree, so don’t miss it. The debate
takes place at the Park Slope Methodist Church,
6th Avenue and 8th Street.

Thursday, October 29 at 7PM
Debate Sponsored by the Food Coalition and other community groups. Topics
to be covered include health, sustainability, school food and curriculum,
expanding access to healthy food, social justice for food workers and
consumers and local healthy food sources. The debate takes place at PS 10
(7th Ave & Prospect Ave) in Park Slope.

Events Past and Upcoming
Many of us were on hand Sunday night to hear Jason West, former Green Party Mayor
of New Paltz, NY, speak at Ginger’s Bar on 5th Avenue. He talked about his researches
into the legal ins and outs of performing same-sex marriages in New York State, his
decision to conduct those marriages, and his ensuing legal troubles. He then gave David
a resounding endorsement. Afterwards we were entertained by the trio of comedians known
as the Dykes With Mics. A fun time was had by attendees of all orientations!

Halloween Parade
We need volunteers for the Park Slope Halloween parade to be in the parade and to help
make costumes and change David’s pedicab into a pirate ship!!!  (We’ll park the ’ship

The parade is on October 31 starting at 6:30 from 7th Ave & 14th Street and ending at the
Old Stone House (5th Ave & 3rd Street). Please let me know if you can help by responding to
this e-blast.

And Last But Definitely Not Least:
ELECTION DAY IS LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY!!!
If we get 20 more volunteers, we will be able to cover all the polling sites in District 39.
Even if you can’t work the entire day, please consider coming out for one or both of the most
crucial shifts: from 6 to 9 AM and/or from 5 to 9 PM.

David and Brad Debate!/Rev. Billy at NYC Mayoral Debate!

DAVID AND BRAD TO DEBATE!

Upcoming Important Candidate Forums

Monday October 19 at 7 PM
All five CD 39 candidates have been invited to a forum sponsored
by the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association. We expect David
to be joined by at least Democrat Brad Lander and Republican
Joe Nardiello. Come support David at the Senesch Community Day
School, 342 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens.

Thursday October 22 at 8 PM
David will go head to head with Democratic candidate Brad Lander
at the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID). This is CBID’s
monthly meeting but it is open to the public. The discussion will
focus on David’s strongest point: reform of the Council and the role
of the Speaker. This topic has generated a lot of press and is a
point where the two candidates strongly disagree, so don’t miss it.
The debate takes place at the Park Slope Methodist Church, 6th Avenue and 8th Street.

And Don’t Miss:

Sunday October 18, 7 PM
David will host Jason West, the former (and some might say controversial)
Mayor of New Paltz and the comediennes Dykes on Mics for an evening of
conversation and laughs. David hopes to engage West in conversation over
his decision to perform same-sex marriages and his subsequent arrest and
court case. The event is at Ginger’s Bar in Park Slope, 363 5th Street
(between 5th and 6th Avenues).

David in the Press

This was a bountiful week for press coverage! Here are links to three articles
that appeared, covering the race in District 39 and David’s views on the political
status quo.

In “Speaker? A Squeaker!” Gersh Kuntzman of the Brooklyn Paper outlined
David’s position that Democratic candidate Brad Lander will be too “cosy”
with the establishment to effect real change, and gave each candidate space
to make a statement on the issue of electing a Council Speaker:

www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/32/40/32_40_gk_council_speaker_39th.html

Similar issues are covered in more detail in “Green Candidate gets red
hot over speaker control” by Thomas Tracy of the Courier Life
(picked up by the New York Post online):

www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brooklyn/green_candidate_gets_red_hot_over_7rDW2ETMN2vRFSoFYI59uO

In the “Battle for Brooklyn City Council seats,”
Erin Durkin of the NY Daily News outlines two races in Brooklyn
where the Democratic front runners are being challenged by third-party candidates:

www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2009/10/11/2009-10-11_battle_for_brooklyn_city_council_seats.html

Fun Events

An “EGGcellent” Saturday
Last Saturday the Egg Man (Ronny Wasserstrom) entertained next generation’s voters
(and their parents) while we handed out David’s Activity Book. (If you haven’t yet
seen this fun and original piece of campaign literature, you and your kids are
in for a treat.) Later that same evening David and several Green Party members
attended a showing at the Film Forum of The Yes Men Fix the World. David was
acknowledged afterwards by one of the Yes Men himself, and then we all gathered
at a nearby bar for more questions and conversation. (See photo)

Saturday October 31 at 6:30 Halloween Parade
Yes, that’s right, this year Halloween is on a Saturday, and we will be taking part
in the Halloween Parade in Park Slope. Meet at 12th Street and 7th Avenue for some
scary fun. This year’s theme will be “Spooky Seas.” We need volunteers to march in
the parade with their kids (in costume of course) and hand out our literature.
Email me with ideas on how we can best participate in the largest children’s
parade in the United States!

How You Can Help The Campaign

More Volunteers Still Needed for Election Day
Election Day is now two weeks away. We hope to have someone at every polling
site to hand out literature and encourage those still on the fence to vote
for David.  The most important shifts are from 6 to 9 AM to catch the pre-work
voters and from 5 to 9 PM for the after-work voters.  These volunteers are
essential to a successful campaign.

Posters of David Available
For those of you who haven’t yet picked up a poster to put in your window, we
still have plenty available. Do you have a favorite shop or restaurant in David’s
district? Perhaps they’d be interested in putting up a poster as well. Let us know
how many you want and someone will personally deliver them to your door!

Canvassing Continues:
David’s canvassers have been busy knocking on doors and handing out brochures
at subways stations. We will be canvassing again this weekend, so if you can
join us, please let me know by responding to this email. We will have canvassers
out on Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 2 and from 1 to 4.

REV. BILLY TALEN MAKES NEWS AT
THE NYC MAYORAL DEBATE!!

Dear Amorous Adventurers On The Campaign Trail,

Tuesday night Rev. Billy Talen stood up at the 1st NYC Mayoral
Debate and preached for Democracy:

Below you can see how people are reacting across the web,
and we need the support of your comments, diggs, tweets,
and re-postings! You can also support this campaign by
marching with us in the NYC Halloween Parade or donating

“Nothing the candidates said during tonight’s mayoral debate
was more surprising than the Rev. Billy Talen’s spirited heckling…”

A Heckler Interrupts

7:02 p.m. | Mr. Bloomberg’s opening statement was interrupted by a
jeering heckler — later identified as the Rev. Billy Talen, a
Green Party candidate for mayor — who shouted epithets attacking
the mayor’s support of legislation last year extending term limits
to allow himself to seek another term.

“Eight is enough” he shouted. “Mike, what are you doing here?
We voted for term limits.”

At least Green Party candidate Billy Talen heckled the Mayor from the audience:

which Bloomberg and the Democrats have victimized in their lust for the bubble-based

DAVID PECHEFSKY Campaign News

Strong Showing at the Candidate Forum

David was in his element Monday night as he, Democrat Brad Lander,
and Republican Joe Nardiello collegially faced off, responding to
the documentary Please Vote For Me and fielding questions from the
audience. Those who attended seemed to appreciate David’s cogent
summation of the flaws in our election process, as well as the role
of the City Council and the importance of balancing the individual
needs of each community with the needs of the city as a whole. Stay
tuned for more candidate forums and debates to come!

Events this Week

Saturday October 10 at 6:15 at the Film Forum (209 W. Houston St.)
This Saturday David will be holding a post-screening Q & A for the
film Yes Men Save the World www.filmforum.org/films/yesmen.html
which depicts anti-corporate troublemakers who get themselves invited
to high-level corporate conferences and onto television, where they
hilariously unmask global injustice. After the 6:15 screening
(at about 8pm) David will answer questions at Lucy Brownes’, a
bar just a 2 minute walk away at 225 Varick Street.  So come
check out the film and then join David at the bar or just come
have a drink and show your support if you are pressed for time!

Egg Man Rescheduled
We’ve rescheduled the Egg Man performance (cancelled last Saturday
due to a sudden downpour) for THIS Saturday at Carroll Park in Carroll
Gardens from 3 — 5pm.  Here’s another chance for you and  your kids to
see this fun show.  Single adults welcome, too!  As before, we need
volunteers to hand out David’s literature to those of voting age that are around.

Canvassing Continues

David’s canvassers have been busy knocking on doors and handing out brochures
at subways stations. We will be canvassing again this weekend, so if you can
join us, please let us know by contacting Jonathan at:
jonathan@pechefskyforcitycouncil.com.
We will have canvassers out on Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 2 and from 1 to 4.

We Still Have Posters

For those of you who haven’t yet picked up a poster to put in your
window, we still have plenty available. Do you have a favorite shop
or restaurant in David’s district? Perhaps they’d be interested in
putting up a poster as well. Let us know how many you want and someone
will personally deliver them to your door!

Last But Not Least—More Volunteers Needed for Election Day!

A big THANK YOU to those who have already signed up to work on
Election Day. But we need many more of you to come out! We hope
to have someone at every polling site to hand out literature and
encourage those still on the fence to vote for David. We have over
100 polling sites in the 39th district and we would like volunteers
passing out information to voters at every one. Is it possible for
you to take 1/2 day off from work? Or to arrive an hour late to work?
Or to leave an hour early?  Or if none of those are a possibility, could
you spend an hour or two when the polls open or before they close to pass
out literature?  Any of these would help our visibility greatly.
Just respond to this email and tell us your availability.

DAVID PECHEFSKY Campaign News

Events this week

Monday October 5 from 7 — 9pm at the Old Reformed Church
at 7th Avenue & Carroll Street in Park Slope is your first
opportunity to see the candidates together
(including Republican, Joe Nardiello).  The candidate forum
will focus on democracy in New York City.  Sounds BORING, right?
Not after viewing the 50 minute documentary that will open the forum!
PLEASE VOTE FOR ME chronicles the election of class monitor in a
Chinese elementary school, complete with intimidation, bribery, and
vote rigging.  The discussion afterward will focus on how well NYC
stacks up world-wide on the democracy scale.

Saturday October 3, 3 — 5pm we’ve lined up The Egg Man to perform
in Carroll Park (F train to Carroll Street, with the park located at
President & Smith), so bring your kids (if you have any) or just come
for some fun.  We need volunteers to hand out David’s literature to
those of voting age that are around.

Sunday, October 4 ALL DAY.  The yearly street fair called The Atlantic
Antic takes place and there is actually a part of it in David’s district!

promoting David and the other Green Party candidates.  Come, wander Atlantic
Avenue, help out at the table and show your support for David.

How You Can Help THIS week!

Saturday we need volunteers to help pass out literature in Carroll Park
from 3 - 5pm while the Egg Man performs.
Sunday we need volunteers to help at the table at the Atlantic Antic.

DAVID PECHEFSKY Campaign News (a bit late, sorry)

General Election Campaign Begins!

Now that we know who we are running against, we can begin a
much more directed campaign.

Our major opponent is Brad Lander, who bears both the
Democratic and Working Family Party’s mantels.
The Republicans are fielding a candidate this
cycle, Joe Nardiello, though they never garner more
than 20% of the vote come November. And this year
even the Libertarians are running: Roger Sarrabo, whom we
met while gathering signatures to get on the ballet.

But the man to beat is Brad Lander. Brad won an impressive
victory in the Democratic primary, but the reality is only
5,000 people out of the 80,000 + registered voters in the district
voted for him. In Council races citywide there was a groundswell
against business as usualleading to the defeat of several incumbents.
Given his experience and expertise, David is well situated to ride
this wave and make a strong case that he is the candidate who will
bring both competence and true reform to the Council.

Look for coverage of our campaign in the Brooklyn Paper
(www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/32/37/32_37_gk_39th_district_other.html).
We encourage our supporters to post comments here and elsewhere so opponents
and naysayers don’t dominate the discussion. This is a small action that all
of us can take.

Posters are in!!!

Window size posters are now available.  We need everyone who is in the
district to display one in a window that faces the street. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY
IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE CAMPAIGN. Most Green Party campaigns are plagued with the
‘but you can’t win’ syndrome, so it is essential that uncommitted voters see lots
of support for David out there.  There are over 200 people receiving
this email blast; that’s A LOT of visibility.

Not only do we encourage you to reply asking for a poster, but we are looking
for a volunteer to coordinate the distribution of these posters. Please let us know
if you can help us do this.

******

DAVID’S UPCOMING EVENTS!!!!

Canvassing off to a strong start

Teams of canvassers promoting David started knocking on doors this week, and will
cover every block in the district before the November 3rd election.  If you happen
to be home when they knock, give them a hearty welcome and make sure you tell them
that you either want a window poster or have one already.  But why leave getting your
poster to chance?  Just reply to this email blast and let us know you want one and
we will arrange to get it to you.

Events This Week

Our croquet challenge has been accepted by both Brad Lander and Joe Nardiello
(the Republican in the race)!  Because of a prior Saturday commitment, the candidates
will play on SUNDAY (this is a change!) from 11am — 1pm.  David will play a practice
session on Saturday with anyone who wants to play.  On both days, all comers are welcome.
We have two croquet sets (thanks to two supporters: Olaf and Karen) and although we will
only set up one course, two sets means 12 balls and mallets!  Please come on either or both
days to show your support for David.

In the works is a candidate forum focusing on democracy in New York City.
Sounds BORING, right?  Not after viewing the 30 minute documentary that will open
the forum! VOTE FOR ME chronicles the election of class monitor in a Chinese elementary
school, complete with intimidation, bribery, and vote rigging.  The discussion afterward
will focus on how well NYC stacks up world-wide on the democracy scale.

PETITIONING ENDS!!

*************************

DAVID PECHEFSKY CAMPAIGN NEWS

Upcoming Event: Your District, Your Candidates, Your Streets

On Tuesday, the very day our petitions are due at the Board of Elections, David will appear along with all the CD 39 candidates at a debate sponsored by Transportation Alternatives.  We urge everyone to attend to show support for David: Tuesday evening, August 18, 7 — 8:30pm at PS 321, 180 Seventh Ave. , between 1st and 2nd Streets in Park Slope.

Transportation issues are close to David’s heart and well within his area of expertise, so this will be a good forum for him.  To be discussed are congestion pricing, car-free Prospect Park , bike lanes, residential parking permit programs, and bridge tolls.  Come support David as he debates these issues with the other District 39 candidates.

Petitioning Over!

Thanks to all of you who went out, weekend after weekend (and some even during the week), wearing your green “Pechefsky for City Council” tee-shirts, roaming the district and filling up petitions, we have WELL OVER 4000 SIGNATURES. With this in mind, we decided to cut our operation short to allow us the time we needed to prepare the petitions for submission to the Board of Elections this coming Tuesday.

We could not have done it without you! But, as I’m sure many of you are wondering, where do we go from here? Well, the fun is just beginning. WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP in the coming weeks. With our petitioning, we’ve done a good job of making people aware of David’s candidacy. Now we need to follow that up with some serious canvassing, either on street corners or door-to-door, or with house parties hosted by…YOU!!  Stay tuned, and we will be contacting you soon as to how you can help the campaign.

REV BILLY FOR NYC MAYOR CAMPAIGN NEWS

Please come by HQ any time through Monday at 5pm with any last signatures you have collected.  Call me any time at 919-402-3489 to let me know you are coming.  Thanks so much for everything you have done to help Rev. Billy get on the ballot!

Last Push to the Summit

David on the Internet: If you haven’t yet seen the new video of David, watch it on his website at www.pechefskyforcitycouncil.com or you can access it through his blog or retry it on Youtube by searching for david pechefsky.

Signature Gathering: This past weekend we had a small but determined contingent petitioning throughout the district.  Our select group produced a high volume of signatures, bringing our weekly total to 760 and our grand total to a wonderful 3,750!  For those of you who haven’t been out for a while (or even if you have), WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP because this week we want to repeat that success!  Can you pledge to gather 25 signatures one day this week? Please let me know when is best for you to be out.

For our last weekend of petitioning, it’s ALL HANDS ON DECK at the most effective locations through the district! Once again we plan to be out in two waves on both Saturday and Sunday, at the supermarkets and farmers’ markets in the morning hours and the subways and other hot spots in the afternoons.

As with our previous district-wide operations, times and meeting places will all be arranged individually, so let me know by email as soon as possible when you can make it and we’ll do as much of the arranging beforehand as possible.

Call me (Jonathan) at 347-416-6939 if you have any last minute changes or concerns.

And here are some times during the week when we plan to be petitioning and could use your help:

Subway stops from 8:15 to 9:30AM. This has been our most effective time for signature gathering and still has a lot of potential.

Evenings from 6 to 8 PM.  We have found that walking down residential blocks in the district and just asking people on their stoop or sidewalk is an effective way to gather signatures.

Please contact me if you want to help with these week-day efforts.

HELP US REACH OUR GOAL OF 4,500 SIGNATURES

AND WE’LL BE IN THE SAFETY ZONE!

REV BILLY CAMPAIGN NEWS

Wondrous Volunteers,

Thanks to all who came out to join our VoteRev Billy Petition Mob at the Summer Streets festival. The day was a huge success.
250 Lafayette was jumping with supporters old and new from across the city. Thanks to all who came by or helped with the Petition Mob!

We are over 14,000 signatures but we still need to get 3,000 more in the next 6 (yes, six!) days.

Monday we campaigned on the subways and talked about education on the A+ For All Of Us Whistle Stop Tour!

This Saturday August 15, from 10-1 we will once again celebrate Summer Streets with a Block Party at HQ, spilling onto a car-less Lafayette Street , so come by, its a great way to get involved, and the petitioning is easy. And once again, we welcome your baked goods.

And don’t forget a shirt for screen printing.

Getting on the ballot is a critical goal for the

Vote Rev. Billy campaign, and we need your help to achieve it.

To download blank petitions and find out about great spots to gather signatures check out www.voterevbilly.org/petition

If you have completed petitions, please turn them in at our weekly Thursday night networking event, Tonight! 7pm at 250 Lafayette St btw Spring and Prince.

It’s up to US, New York - let’s put democracy back on the ballot!

Many Thanks,

Savitri
